Athletics Development Programme

KA Leisure's Athletics Development Programme works in partnership with North Ayrshire Athletics Club along with North Ayrshire Council’s Active Schools Team, and includes coaching activities and events for children aged from 5 up to 16, and adults.
For youngsters, KA Campuses and other venues across North Ayrshire provide venues for a programme providing opportunities to take part in fundamentals of athletics - running, jumping and throwing – in a fun, safe environment, guided by our coaches.  These programmes include; Primary School Athletic Cluster Clubs, School Athletics Events and a Club Access Programme to develop a  Pathway linking to Local Athletic Clubs.

New Athletics Partnership

North Ayrshire Athletics Club and KA Leisure are delighted to announce an extension to their partnership which will see the club and KA Leisure working together in the community sessions based at the KA Campus at St. Matthew's Academy. This partnership will see the next generation of  aspiring Olympic and commonwealth athletes be given first class coaching and an pathway into the club.

Starting on Monday and Thursdays from January 2016 between 17.00 – 18.00, the popular “Club Access Programme” will replace the KA “Run Jump and Throw” classes that were offered by KA at St. Matthew's, this is the first stage of an ambitious plan which will see similar partnership sessions being introduced across North Ayrshire.

"KA Leisure are delighted to be working closely with the club in delivering these community based sessions. Not only will the community benefit but we feel our coaches will develop working with the clubs on a regular basis.  We have a really good working relationship with the club and to see it extend to help provide even better coaching and experiences for the people of North Ayrshire is great news for us all"

North Ayrshire Athletics Club, who won the Scottish Athletics Club of the year provide coaching for all age groups and abilities. Their fun based mini athletics for ages 3-6 is a great starting point for any young athlete, the club access programme for ages 7 and over is the next step on the pathway to the club. For those over the age of 16 they have a jog group which meets on a Tuesday night. New for 2016 they are introducing a track and field class where adults can go and learn the basis of shot putt, javelin, long jump and loads of other disciplines of athletics.

Athletes will be able to register on the day.  Athletes doing this should report to the Registration desk, where their name will be added to the appropriate race list and they will be issued with a competitor number.  Athletes whose entry has not been pre-paid by the school should pay the entry fee at this time.  All competitors should have their correct number pinned securely at top and bottom to the front of their shirt/vest.

All competitors will receive a certificate of participation.

The overall League prizes will be calculated from each individual’s top three placings from the four events.  The same will apply to the Team positions.  This means that if an athlete misses one race, he or she can still be in contention for an overall League prize.  The overall League prizes will be awarded to: 1st, 2nd and 3rd individual placings in each race section 1st Girls’ and 1st Boys’ Team in each race section (Primary Schools only)

League events will be postponed only where risk assessment prior to or on race day indicates that this is appropriate, e.g. icy conditions, high winds, very heavy rain. The decision to postpone is usually made based on weather forecasting, and schools would then be advised by phone call on the Wednesday prior to the race. However, weather forecasting is not always entirely accurate, and sometimes a decision may be taken based on risk assessment at the venue early on race day. In this case, we will do everything we can to advise schools of the decision to postpone prior to the scheduled start time of the event. Postponed events are usually rescheduled by adding an event on after the scheduled end of the league.  If there is any doubt please contact Tel No. 01294 317457 before 4:00pm on the Friday prior to the race.
